Bradford Claimants Union meets every Tuesday 1 .30pm, 'Fourth Idea' Bookshop at 14 Southgate.

7 Feb 1981 Claimants Union Benefit at Queens Hall. – Giro Jive Pyramid, False Claims and Sheds. 70p/40p Claimants.

11 April 1981. National TUC and Labour Party March Against Unemployment. Len Murray refuses to donate to C.U but Arthur Scargill of the NUM does!

29th April 1981 – 1 in 12 Club Opening Night – Metropole with False Claims, The Sheds and Dole Q Disco. 60p waged 40p unwaged

May 27th 1981 – “What’s on at 1 in 12” - The "1 in 12 Club" is there to give you fun at a cheap price. Each week there are bands, the Dole Q Disco and a variety of other entertainments. The 1 in 12 is organised and run by claimants. Any proceeds go to Bradford’s Claimants Union. “10 million claimants can't be wrong -join the 1 in 12 and be an enemy of State!”

February 1982 “Worst of 1in 12 Club volume 1” Cassette released of bands who have played the Club.

March 1982 3rd issue of KDIS Produced

April 1982 Club gets a permanent set of lights and use of 100 watt P.A

April 1982 4th issue of KDIS produced

23rd April 1982 BBC 2 ‘Something Else’ documentary about Bradford music features the 1in12 Club and members Gary, Aki and Jacko.

29th April 1982 First Anniversary Party – 3 Johns, Little Brother and Surfin’ Dave.

May 1982 1in12 Club evicted from Metropole because idiots damage the bar.

July 1982. Iin12 Free Festival "Bop Against the Blues" at University amphitheatre (with Bradford Centre Against Unemployment)
February 1983 “Worst of the 1 in 12 Club Volume 2” cassette released

Feb 1983 Textile Hall – One off gig - Club still alive and kicking despite being homeless.

Feb 1983 1in12 Newsletter - "At present we are trying to find our own premises where we can organise the "1 in 12 Club" on a full-time permanent basis. So far, the council won’t let us use any of their many empty premises, but we intend to step up the pressure."

27th February 1983 The Future of the 1 in 12 Club – Special Open Meeting at The Royal Standard. "To discuss possibilities of permanent full-time club, amongst other things"

March 1983 – New Residency – Tickles on a Wednesday night - 1 in 12 Membership launched to establish credibility for applications for “vast amounts of money… after suspending all our high morals about not accepting money off the state (since the only money the state has is what its stolen off us anyway!”)

March 1983 – Application to ‘unemployed sub-committee’ for £5000 to buy a PA system after lights and PA stolen from the Metropole.

May 1983 – Membership reaches 300 – Gigs at Tickles are packed!

June 1983 – Membership reaches 400 – Membership encourages people to get involved in the running of the Club. We've no room for "committee types”. People who are prepared to match ideas with action are welcome."

June 1983 – Planning for second 1 in 12 Free Festival ‘Skive off and Jive’ starts.

August 1983. Membership over 500. Call for more women to get involved.

13th August 1983 – 1in12 ‘Skive off and Jive open-air Festival’ at University amphitheatre attended by 4000 people! Police asked not to attend as Club members will steward – No trouble.

September 1983 – Grant application to Bradford Council (Department of Environment budget) for £60,000 ‘capital only’ funding to purchase a building. The Big One!

29th September 1983 – A few 1 in 12 members attend Stop the City in London.

October 1983 Membership now over 600. Call out for more women to get involved.

October 1983 – KDIS no.7 produced – investigation into Marcus Fox Shipley MP picked up by Private Eye Magazine and Daily Mirror / Plans to release a vinyl album next years announced.

23rd November 1983- First gig at the Market Tavern. (Spectre / Those Framed Edges)

December 1983 – Grant awarded for PA. Members stunned. Now waiting for news on The Big One! “We must emphasise that the 1 in 12 Club is a members club it belongs to all of us. Therefore, in case of any trouble we all have a responsibility to defuse the situation. Our strength lies in our solidarity. So, don' t turn a blind eye and leave it to someone else.”

January 1984 Bradford Council approve application. The first hurdle. Now goes to the Department of Environment.

January 1984 Membership reaches 800. Discussion at Sunday Meeting about constitutional structure of the Club, KDIS and Record Collective. “The Club is not itself responsible for these groups”.

29th January 1984 Plans begin for 3rd 1 in 12 Free Festival at the University amphitheatre.

March 1984 – Constitutional amendments agreed at Sunday Meeting.

March 1984 – KDIS No.8 published

March 1984. Direct Action Collective produce badges to raise funds for Solidarity Fund for member who are nicked at political actions

29th March 1984 Strong contingent from Club go to London for Stop the

3rd April 1984 3rd Anniversary Party. Market Tavern. 200 turn up! 3 Johns and Party Day.

8th April 1984 AGM – Constitution passed. Wild Will Beckett re-elected as General Secretary sets out an exciting year ahead – fanzine selling hundreds, album nearly ready for pressing, festival planned. Club Membership successfully launched – “Students to be discouraged!”

April 1984 KDIS 9 Published – ‘The Brethren: Investigation of Bradford Freemasons’ – The series of articles is to have major ramifications!!!!

Miners’ Strike – “As you know the miners struggle looks like being long and hard. Some comrades are doing some printing for local mining communities for free – and need financial help. We’ll have ocassional collections, please give generously – remember these families have NO INCOME at all” (KDIS)

30th April 1984 Still no news on ‘The Big One!’

20th May 1984 1in12 gigs packed. Decision to run a second club night at Market Tavern from 19th June.

Miners’ Strike – Food and money collections at every gig. Collections to Ledstone Luck Colliery in Kippax, Leeds. “Bring a tin of food when you come to gigs”.
